Novak Djokovic advanced to his seventh final after defeating Monfils, 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 in 2.30hs.
On one of the hottest and most humid days of the Open so far, with near-record temperatures on court, both players struggled physically and were visited by the trainer for a variety of ailments. Monfils left the court for a medical timeout midway through the fourth set while Djokovic had both his right and left shoulders massaged.
Nole described the match as: “Humid. That’s all we were thinking about and feeling”. “Well, it was a strange match, as it always is, I guess, when you play Gaël, who is very unpredictable player,” said Djokovic.”I was completely caught off guard when he just stood there and chipped the ball back and didn’t do much.”
Monfils defended his unconventional play (that made a lot of fans angry) as a deliberate strategy. “Definitely I try to get in his head. You know, try to create something new for him to see,”.”I made a sign to my coach and say, ‘OK, I’m going to Plan B,’. I’m just embracing the fact the guy is too good for me, and I try to switch strategy.” “Is not academic, but I try to win,”
Nole said about Monfils ´s strategy: “It was just so uncharacteristic and very unusual to see a player in the semifinals of a Grand Slam … move around and play like that or behave like that.”
Novak will face Stanislas Wawrinka in the final on Sunday at 5pm local time (10pm CET).
