Novak Djokovic defeated Jerzy Janowicz, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 on Monday night in .
Nole improves to 58-9 in Flushing Meadows (including 20-1 in night matches), putting him on track to maintaining an impressive streak in New York: he has reached the final four or better at the US Open every year since 2007.
“Night sessions here are the best in the world,” Djokovic said on court after the match. “Jerzy is an unpredictable player… It wasn’t to be in the second [set] but overall it was a good performance.”
Djokovic sealed the first set with a break at 3-2. Nole had three chances to break at 2-2 in the second set but Janowicz saved them all and rode the momentum for his first break. A sailing Djokovic forehand at 6-5 tied the match at one set a piece. He earned five breaks in the final two sets to advance.
“After undergoing certain treatments, I’ve gotten better,” Djokovic said in his pre-tournament press conference. “I’m just hoping that Monday when the tournament starts I’ll be able to, as I said, get as close to the maximum of executing my backhand shot as possible.”
